Truman worked tirelessly to clean the postwar mess and establish a new internal order. He helped create the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund(IMF). and funded the rebuilding of Japan under General Douglas Mac Arthur.
In 1947 Truman outlined the Marshall Plan, which set aside more than $10 Biullion for the rebuilding and industrializion of Germany. As a result, Western Europe exceeded prewar production levels within just a few years.
#3) "The Marshall Plan" had a goal of not spreading communism throughout the countries of Western Europe. At first, the massive economic aid to Europe , which met some resistance in Europe, failed because the Soviet-supported Communists took over the government, which caused the resistance to disappear. However, the plan contributed 13 billion to the rebuilding of the countries of Western Europe. No Western government in the region fell to a communist revolution which is what George Marshall predicted. Through this plan, there was no spread of communism in Western Europe!

4. Summarize Truman's postwar foreign policy.
Answer: The Truman Doctrine was a commitment to help nations threatened by comminism and soviet expansion. Proposed to congress in 1974 by President Truman.
Winston Churchill- The British prime minister of the time. During WW2 he helped negotiate the treaty with the "Big Three" (Stalin, FDR, Churchill)
Joseph Stalin- The supreme ruler of the U.S.S.R. Cut off the communist countries from the rest of the world. "Iron Curtain"

Chiang Kai-Shek- Created the Peoples Republic of China
2. Define Inflation and closed shop (pg 784)
Inflation: a rise in prices
Closed Shop: a workplace that hires only Union members
5. The United States were given a section of erlin and would be included in this republic as well. Even though the city lay within Soviet-held East Germany. The Berlin Blockade was Stalin's answer to the West's plans for west Germany. The soviets rushed into position around the edge of West Berlin. This was an outrage and was a main cause to the Cold War.
5. After the Soviet Union issued the Berlin Blockade on June 24, 1948, President Truman decided to not go down without a fight in his idea of reuniting Germany to help with the future of Europe. Stalin did not like this plan so he thought up the Berlin Blockade plan. He put Soviet troops into position around the edge of West Berlin and cut off all roads, supplies and water routes. In response to this the US began airlifting supplies into West Berlin. The US had airlifted day and night for more than 10 months and delivered about 2.5 million tons of supplies to West Berlin.

Truman proposed a policy known as the Truman Doctrine. It was a commitment to help nations threatened by communism and Soviet expansion. The congress gave military and economic assistance to Greece and Turkey to hold back the Soviets.
During the war, gov government price controls had kept the cost of consumer goods such as food and clothing quite stable. When the government removed these controls, prices began to surge. This rise in prices, or inflation, also resulted from a huge increase in consumer demand and spending. During the wary years, Americans had saved their money because many consumer goods were unavailable or rationed. Now they were eager to spend this money on new consumer products and services.
2) iron curtain: Winston Church believed that the divison between east and west was permanent. In 1946 he declared that an iron curtain had desended in Europe. He meant that the soviets had cut off eatern europe from the west.
containment: the united states would try to "contain" soviet expansion through limited military means and nonmilitary means in areas of the world that were of strategic importance to the united states.
airlift: american and british cargo planes began flying food, fuel, and other supplies into west berlin. the berlin airlift continued day and night for 10 months.
cold war: a war in which two enemies did not actually fight each other. instead each nation began building up its military forces and arms in an atempt to intimidate the other.
Congress approved the program of economic aid for urope, the Marshall Plan, which bevame a vital part of the policy of containment. Between 1948 and 1951, the Marshall plan contributed nearly 13,000,000,000 to the rebuilding of the countries of western europe. It gave them enough money to sustain government and they did not fall to a communist revolution. Without this aid they may have been taken over by a communist leader.
GI Bill of Rights: The G.I. Bill was an omnibus bill that provided college or vocational education for returning World War II veterans
Taft-Hartley Bill: is a United States federal law that monitors the activities and power of labor unions. The act, still effective, was sponsored by Senator Robert Taft and Representative Fred A. Hartley, Jr. and legislated by overriding U.S.
Strom Thurmond: James Strom Thurmond (December 5, 1902 – June 26, 2003) was an American politician who served as a United States Senator. He also ran for the Presidency of the United States in 1948 as the segregationist States Rights Democratic Party candidate, receiving 2.4% of the popular vote and 39 electoral votes.
Henry Agard Wallace (October 7, 1888 – November 18, 1965) was the 33rd Vice President of the United States (1941–1945), the Secretary of Agriculture (1933–1940), and the Secretary of Commerce (1945–1946). In the 1948 presidential election, Wallace was the nominee of the Progressive Party.
Thomas Edmund Dewey (March 24, 1902 – March 16, 1971) was the 47th Governor of New York (1943–1954). In 1944 and 1948, he was the Republican candidate for President, but lost both times. He led the liberal faction of the Republican Party, in which he fought conservative Ohio Senator Robert A. Taft.
the United State's actions against the soviet union in the Berlin Blockade were considered part of a cold war becasue of tension. The trrops made a huge blockade that stoppped all trafficthru east germany o west belin, they hope this would drive the west out of berlin.

Mao Zedong-FOrmed new commuist state in china called the peoples republic. he won the civil war in china
Chiang Kai-shek-commanded mao zedongs troop. head of the of the chinese government.
Inflation was caused after WWII. As the war was going on, government price controls had kept a stable cost of the consumer goods such as food and clothing. However, there was a change when the government removed these controls and the prices began to go up. The rise of inflation was also caused by a huge increase in consumer demand and spending.
The Taft-Hartley Bill limited the actions that workers could take against their employers. It made the "closed shop" illegal. That is a shop that only hires union members. This bill also allowed the government to stop strikes that were taking place in work places, across the country. This bill reflected the government because the bill created stricter rules, which is why the bill was made because the government wanted to bring the hammer down.

3) The congress passed the gi bill of rights which granted millions of dollars in loans to returning gi's (soldiers) so that they could get an edcuation, start a business, etc., and get their lives back on track. Inflation of consumer goods had to be brought back under control since the government was no longer regulating the prices, most of these good were un available during war times due to shortages. As inflations out ran wages workers demanded increases in pay which did not come about until after millions went on strike.
Congress passed the GI bill to allow veterans from the war to go to school. When the government released control of consumer goods the prices went up during inflation. This also resulted because of a huge increase in demand for products.

At first the United States were trying to push back the Korean forces across the 38th parallel. The goals for the war began to change when China intervened in the conflict. demilitarized zone is an area, usually the frontier or boundary between two or more military powers/alliances where military activity is not permitted, usually by peace treaty, armistice, or other bilateral or multilateral agreement.
Some organizatioins required individuals to sign oaths swearing their loyalty to the united states. Those who refused risked losing their jobs. The aim of the Oat was to make sure there was no comunism starting to form. That was the main key of the oaths.

"In a free country, we punish men for crimes they commit," he said "but never for opinions they hold."
Truman sent troops in to protect South Korea from North Korea and he appointed Mcarthur.
no, I do not believe that Truman should have let McArthur attack china. that would have started another (almost) world war. that was the last thing we needed. Besides, not shortly after that, we ended our problems with china.

Republicans set up proposa;s to enact a program that would limit government spending, contol labor unions, reduce government regulation of the economy, and reverse policies adopted in the 1930's New Deal. Republicans wanted to limit the power of unions so big buisnesses could expand. The Taft Hartley Bill limited the amount of actions workers could take against their emploiers. No! Because Truman didn't want to attact McArthur because it would have caused another World War. that was the last thing that we needed. Not long after Truman fired McArthur, we settled our disputes with China.
