sec 3 #5
Television allowed for advertisers to send messages during a show advertising their products. more people were exposed to these adds and people were more likely to buy the product. The use of catchy tunes and flashy advertising also helped people remember what product was being advertised.

Television was one of the most important things that effected consumer spending in the 1950s. first off over 6 million sets were bought each year in the 50s. the main thing it did though was show people what they did not have. When people saw these things they had to have them and went out and got them

Jack Kerouac- A novelist in 1948. rebelled against American culture for its conformity, blind faith in technology, and materialism through his writings.

Allen Ginsberg- A poet that also criticized American society.

Betty Friedan- She helped support the suburban housewife that cared for the family and did all of the house work.

many farmers did not share in the prosperity of the 1950s because huge crop surpluses during those years caused the prices of the farm products to decline dramatically.

machines began to replace the farmhands (people who would pick the crops) so those people lost their jobs. many farmers worked hard, yet still struggled to make ends meet.

Section 3 #3
One of the major changes was the increased rate of childbirth. More children were begin born and raised beyond infancy due to medical advances and with the income of americans being increased, more americans could afford babies, so they made babies.
Another major change were the medical advances. More antibiotics and vaccines were begin produced and Dr. Jonas Salk made a vaccine that was effective against polio, and the threat of polio was almost eliminated.

The Beats disliked Americas' conformity to what was new and in, it disliked Americas' faith in technology and it disliked how America cherished materialism.

Jack KErouac-Created the term beat which meant wearinness with all forms of modern industrial state. he was a part of the group the beats which sharply critisized american society. they rebelled against conformity, b;lind faith in technology and materialis. he worte ON the Road which is the most influential book by the beats. Many were influenced by their work
Allen Ginsberg-Part if the Beats. Along with Kerouac abd other members changed the way many americans lived their lives.
Betty Friedan-A surbaban house wife and mother. she thought that women found happiness in being a housewife. Her book the feminine mystique described the frustration that comes along with this.

Suburban life appealed to many americans because they were able to have affordable homes that offered privacy and isolation from urbn issues. There was much space for cars and room to raise children. In the suburbs they gained a sense of belonging in a community formed by people in similar age, social background, and race.

Elvis Presley
- Quickly burst into the nation scene in 1956
- One of the most popular musicians of the 20th century. He is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King".
- He was an idol to millions of young Americans. His music provided a common bond. The differing attitudes of older and younger generations towards music, as well as other forms of popular culture, later came known as the generation gap.

television alowed for a huge marketing jump through comercials. adds for everything were shown and because everyone who was watching tv saw them they felt they needed them. Catchy comercials heled people remember the product also.

suburban housewives were unhappy with their roles because they were expected to live up to this "perfect wife" image. They werent supposed to have any individuality, and were only supposed to be concerned with her husband, the children, and the cleanliness of the home. Honestly, their lives seemed somewhat boring, and very controlled.

Jack kerouac- was an American novelist and poet. he invented the term "beat" ,which means wearniess with all forms of modern industrial state, for the group of writers called the beats.

allen ginsberg- was an American poet who vigorously opposed militarism, materialism and sexual repression. In the 1950s, Ginsberg was a leading figure of the Beat Generation.

Betty friedan- worte a book called The Feminine Mystique, about the unhappiness of of the suburan housewives. it was the first book on this topic.

Surban housewives were dissatiffied with their roles in life during the 1950's. The media advertised houswives as healthy beautiful educated and only concerned with the home.These high standards of a perfect apperiance caused frustration and unhappiness.

The television allowed for another way of advertising things to the public. People would watch their favorite shows and that would lead to them wanting the merchandise associated to those shows. The television boosted consumer spending all across the nation.

betty friedan- a suburban housewife and mother, she described the average american young womans dream as wanting to be a house wife. but many suburban housewives were not happy with their lives at home
